Black Bean Sweet Potato Chili

Writer: Thoughts by MeThoughts by Me

I found this one Pinterest. It came out pretty good.

Black Bean Sweet Potato Chili 1 lb. ground turkey 1 sweet potato 1 onion 1 can diced tomatoes 1 can of black beans (I don’t buy canned. I soak dry beans overnight) 2 cups of water 1 chili seasoning packet (I use powdered New Mexico Chile)

Brown Turkey in a skillet (I season with Adobo seasoning and sauté my onions with the meat)Throw it all in the crock pot on high for 4-6 hours. Spoon into bowl and top with sour cream and shredded cheese.

In my quest for a healthier lifestyle, I discovered the GM diet (aka “7 day cleanse” on Pinterest…..aka the “Cabbage Diet’). First allow me to say I am not a believer in “diets”. To me they seem nothing but fads and programs that people can’t possibly sustain. Like the low-carb diet my hubby follows (theoretically). He does well for a while then crashes to the ground having fallen from the wagon with a big THUD! The fastest way to a healthier body is not putting all the empty calories into it (Don’t get me wrong, once a month I tend to polish off a package of Oreos that is clearly labeled “mom”). People crave quick fixes. It’s the human way. As a 38 year old, I am fully realizing the damage I have done to my body throughout my life and am striving to be healthier.

As a teenager I had an amazing stomach. One child and 2 hernia surgeries have changed that forever. Pregnancy and my lack of self control caused a seriously unhealthy diet. I ate a large pizza (it was thin crust) every night of my third trimester. It changed my body. Now I can’t have anything with whey (which is in all dairy) in it or I get really sick and on top of that I weighed 300 lbs. after I delivered him.

Now as I look at myself and my friends I can see the problems we all created in ourselves. We only get one body. The Bible warns us to take care of ourselves, yet we don’t heed its advice and we live like we are indestructible and can put massive doses of toxins in our bodies without consequence. I want to change that for myself and hopefully be an inspiration to others.

My first encounter with this program was on Pinterest. The cleanse part is what caught my eye having just quit smoking six weeks ago after an unhealthy 27 year habit. I was looking for ways to clean out my system and stumbled across this diet. For this plan you must drink at least 10 glasses of water a day and abstain from alcohol (only for the first 7 days, if you plan on using this longer or more often. Note: if you continue on this diet 3 days off are suggested before repeating). I am not fond of regular water so I added some fruits, veggies and fresh herbs to infuse it with flavor (I stuck within the guidelines as well ie: fruit on fruit day, veggies on veggie day. Cucumber, lemon, peppermint water is the bomb!).

My goal in this is not weight loss; it is a healthier lifestyle, so I didn’t weigh myself to begin with, but I will take note of how my clothes fit and I’ve measured my waist at 34 inches (yikes!) I am staying within the daily guidelines because some of the general guidelines are a bit confusing like the “GM Wonder Soup” part. “The following soup is intended as a supplement to your diet. It can be eaten any time of the day in virtually unlimited quantities. You are encouraged to consume large quantities of this soup” (it contradicts itself on day 4 and doesn’t fit in with Day 1 at all).

Claims of the diet: from http://health-heaven.tumblr.com/post/17089615944/what-do-you-think-of-gms-diet (I’ve seen it multiple other places too):

“This plan can be used as often as you like without any fear of complications. It is designed to flush your system of impurities and give you a feeling of well being. After seven days you will begin to feel lighter because you will be lighter by at least 10 lbs. You will have an abundance of energy and an improved disposition.”

Seems to be true enough. Nothing stands out as a red flag to me. It is said to be USDA and FDA( http://www.diethealthclub.com/PDF-files/General-Motors-Diet-Plan.pdf) approved as well. Although, I am anemic and need to watch that my iron levels don’t plunge to nothingness. We’ll see about the disposition change, though (I could use a healthy dose of “tude” adjustment with everything that’s happening in my life right now, so that would be a definite bonus). I will journal my findings the morning after for full effect.

Well, here I go:
